BankIslami Expands Riba-Free Banking to All Faiths in Pakistan

Karachi: BankIslami, a leading Islamic financial institution in Pakistan, recently unveiled a new initiative to expand its riba-free banking services to a broader audience, aiming to include individuals of all faiths and backgrounds in its ethical financial system.

According to Bank Islami Pakistan Limited, the initiative was launched at a significant event held at Mohatta Palace in Karachi, attended by top figures such as Jameel Ahmad, the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, along with other notable personalities like Deputy Governor Saleem Ullah and IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon. The presence of such prominent individuals underscores broad support for BankIslami’s commitment to promoting financial inclusivity based on Shariah principles.

The initiative reflects the bank’s dedication to fostering an inclusive banking environment that aligns with global ethical standards and supports the growth of the Islamic finance industry, currently valued at over $3 trillion. At the launch, Governor Jameel Ahmad emphasized the State Bank’s endorsement of BankIslami’s mission to provide banking solutions free of riba (interest), which aligns with the Islamic prohibition of interest due to its exploitative nature.

Rizwan Ata, CEO of BankIslami, remarked on the initiative’s alignment with Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision of equality and the importance of trust and transparency in banking. Deputy CEO Imran H. Shaikh highlighted that the Islamic banking services are intended for anyone who values fairness, not just Muslims.

This effort by BankIslami is part of a broader strategy to involve diverse communities in ethical banking practices that promote asset-backed transactions and shared risk, appealing to a wide demographic regardless of religious background.
