KARACHI: Former Vice President of FPCCI and ex-Chairman of the Pakistan Ship Agents Association, Tariq Haleem, expressed concerns over the upcoming federal budget, which is being developed under IMF conditions, potentially posing challenges for the business community and public. He urged the government to refrain from decisions that might hinder economic activities and investment.
According to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Haleem remarked that the ongoing revenue collection shortfall necessitates a reevaluation of the Federal Board of Revenue's policies. He advocated for broadening the tax base rather than increasing taxes on current taxpayers. He also suggested reducing the General Sales Tax to a single-digit rate and providing incentives for ship agents and the maritime trade sector to bolster trade and exports.
Haleem stressed the importance of decreasing reliance on foreign loans and highlighted the need for policies that support economic growth and employment. He pointed out that the economic slowdown is a critical issue, underscoring the urgency of measures that encourage productive sectors.
