Karachi Industrialists Rally Behind Chamber’s Nationwide Strike Call

KARACHI: The SITE Association of Industry Karachi has announced its unwavering support for the Karachi Chamber's proposed nationwide strike on July 19. The move comes in response to the contentious Sections 37A and 37B of the Finance Bill, which the industrialists argue grant excessive powers to tax authorities.

Ahmed Azeem Alvi, the President of the SITE Association, criticized the bill for allowing tax officials to arrest and prosecute taxpayers based on mere suspicion. Alvi has expressed that these provisions are unacceptable and must be repealed.

Representing the interests of industrialists in the SITE area, Alvi has issued a stark warning: should the government maintain these laws, the SITE industrial zone will cease operations on July 19. Such a shutdown could disrupt production, delay exports, and lead to job losses, with the government bearing the consequences.

Alvi questioned the rationale behind these laws, suggesting they deter business growth and undermine economic stability. He emphasized that global practices favor tax incentives to boost business confidence and economic growth—a stark contrast to the current situation in Pakistan.

In discussions with Javed Bilwani, President of the Karachi Chamber, Alvi pledged full support for efforts to address these grievances. He also highlighted additional challenges such as e-filing and e-Bilty, calling for government clarity on its expectations from the business community.

Alvi stressed the importance of a business-friendly environment for Pakistan's economic ambitions. He criticized the lack of preparatory sessions by the FBR and urged a shift away from intimidating tactics.

In a direct appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Alvi called for the repeal of these laws and accountability for those responsible. He proposed involving chamber presidents in legislative processes to ensure laws are relevant and practical.
