Karachi: Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), has raised concerns about ongoing slow internet connectivity and restricted access to social media applications, noting severe disruptions to business operations.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, “Although assurances were given that internet speed would return to normal following the installation of a safety firewall, businesses continue to face significant challenges,” Sheikh remarked. He detailed that numerous member firms are struggling to connect with clients both domestically and internationally, especially via platforms like WhatsApp, with the problem now extending over a week.
Sheikh elaborated on the impact, stating that slow internet speeds and unreliable social media apps are hindering business members from obtaining quotes and conducting transactions with international vendors and buyers, potentially leading to substantial financial losses. He highlighted the dire situation for freelancers in the IT sector who are unable to meet deadlines for their overseas projects due to these delays.
Further, Sheikh expressed urgency for restoring internet services promptly. He emphasized that in the digital age, Pakistan cannot afford such setbacks which not only result in financial losses but also damage the country’s global reputation. He urged the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to expedite their efforts in resolving these issues to support freelancers and IT professionals who contribute significantly to the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
