Karachi: The President of Pakistan Business Group (Sindh Region), Malik Khuda Bakhsh, has described the Gul Plaza incident as a national tragedy and called for the swift completion of rescue operations and immediate relief for affected shopkeepers.
According to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Malik Khuda Bakhsh emphasized the need for a neutral and transparent inquiry into the incident, highlighting the importance of integrity and public disclosure of the facts. He stated that strict action should be taken against those deemed responsible.
Malik Khuda Bakhsh noted that the Gul Plaza tragedy is among the most severe in Karachi's history. Despite the passage of several days, recovery efforts remain incomplete. He expressed concern over the implications for Karachi's firefighting capabilities, citing alarming insights from current and former Chief Fire Officers.
He pointed out that with Karachi's population nearing 40 million, the city requires significantly more fire stations and firefighters. The current infrastructure, comprising only 28 fire stations and 930 firefighters, falls short of international standards, leaving one firefighter responsible for approximately 1,000 people.
Concluding his statement, Malik Khuda Bakhsh offered prayers for the victims and expressed solidarity with the grieving families.
