Pakistan Carpet Industry Seeks Stronger Ties with Rwanda, Urges Government Support

Lahore: The Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association is pushing to strengthen trade ties with Rwanda, expand exports, and address challenges facing the industry. Mian Atiq-ur-Rehman, chairman of the association, held discussions with Harerimana Fatou, Rwanda's High Commissioner, to explore opportunities for collaboration and market entry for Pakistan's hand-knotted carpets.

According to Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the meeting also involved Mr. Kwibuka Esdras, Head of Finance and Trade at the Rwanda High Commission. Mian Atiq-ur-Rehman stressed the need for the Pakistani Embassy in Rwanda to adopt a proactive role, aiming for a free trade agreement following successful market entry. He noted that Rwanda could serve as a gateway to other regional markets.

In a separate meeting, Atiq-ur-Rehman and Vice Chairman Riaz Ahmed called on the government to release funds for the 42nd International Handmade Carpet Exhibition in Lahore. They warned of falling behind competitors like India due to funding delays, which hinder outreach to international buyers. They appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and relevant ministers for immediate intervention and funding.

The association also urged for a relief package in the upcoming budget to address rising production costs and taxation, which have impacted the industry's viability. They emphasized the need for tax reductions, freight relief, and incentives to revive growth in one of Pakistan's oldest export sectors.
